Born
and raised in California, figurative artist Deborha d’Arms comes from a family
of numerous artists, including the Walt Disney animator Kenneth Hultgren and Los
Angeles artist Ruby Andresen. Drawing and painting at a very early age, she received several awards, a scholarship to the San Francisco Academy of Art at seventeen, and her first exhibition at nineteen. In 1983 d’Arms received her A.A. degree, and a B.A. degree in Studio Art at San Jose State University in 1988. She has studied and traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially Paris, and has exhibited her work in galleries and museums in Paris; England; Chelsea and Soho, New York; Alaska; and Las Vegas; as well as Southern and Northern California where she currently resides. Her work has been collected in both Europe and on both coasts of the United States. With roots ranging from the Italian Renaissance to Modern Expressionism, d’Arms layered, textural figures and imagery are worked in oil on canvas together with mixed media ranging from various textiles, handmade papers, to human hair. The human figure most interests her in its ability to express and to communicate what we are, and can become.
